This is the sixth year the Wilson Fundations phonics program will be utilized in kindergarten. It is a researched-based program that is aligned with the Common Core goals and objectives listed for kindergarten in this subject area. Vocabulary, fluency and comprehension instruction are included as well. It follows a systematic approach that explicitly teaches the areas mentioned above. The skills are taught in a cumulative nature, therefore, there is always an opportunity for reviewing and revisiting previously taught skills and concepts.

Through the use of multi-modality methods, students will learn letter formation through the use of "sky-writing", which involves gross motor skills, before they apply this skill on paper and/or white boards. Additionally, sound cards with familiar key-word picture symbols are utilized each lesson to help students remember consonants, vowels and digraphs, along with their corresponding sounds. Students will also manipulate letters with letter tiles to spell and read words.  They will learn the strategy to "tap out" sounds in words for reading and spelling. This will enable the students to become proficient readers and writers.
