This week we will be continuing our review of phonetics and pronunication of the Spanish Language. Our objective now is not only to pronounce words acurately, but also understand words spoken in Spanish by others. Here is the Curriculmn Standard that is met by our weeks lesson

WL.7.1.NH.A.8 - [Cumulative Progress Indicator] - Identify some unique linguistic elements in English and the target language AND

WL.7.1.NH.A.1 - [Cumulative Progress Indicator] - Recognize familiar words and phrases, understand the main idea, and infer the meaning of some highly contextualized, unfamiliar spoken or written words in culturally authentic materials using electronic information and other sources related to targeted themes.

Now that we have a good understanding of cobination vowel sounds we need to identify them in Spanish in "REAL LIFE SITUATIONS"

Each year, the Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (Spanish lottery commission) produces a TV commercial to promote the lottery, and I’ve shared the video from 2014. To make sense of what’s going on in the video, you’ll need a bit of background on how the lottery works.

“El Gordo" (The Fat one aka the big pay out) Lottery tickets are usually sold in tenths (décimos), because an individual ticket is quite pricey. If a ticket wins, then everyone who bought a tenth of that ticket gets 10% of the prize money. In this commercial, the cafe owner offers to sell his friend un décimo, but the friend declines. The implication is that that money is tight for him right now. Unemployment in Spain is still at one of the highest levels in the EU. I’ll let you see for yourself how the commercial ends. WATCH IT ONCE BEFORE YOU TRY TO COMPLETE THE ACTIVITY. While completing the acivity you can pause the commercial as many times as needed. Email your work to [email protected]
