Course Description

The Adapted Physical Education, or APE, program services students with disabilities. We will participate in a variety of fitness programs and lifetime recreational sports. The purpose of the class is placed on cultivating lifetime/recreational activities as well as health and wellness that will nurture students in such a way as to build self-esteem and self-confidence in school as well as in the community.  Students must have an IEP or a medical condition diagnosed by a physician, in order to enroll in this course.

Where is Adapted PE Provided?

APE, like all special education, is offered in the least restrictive environment. Students with disabilities must be included to the maximum extent possible in the general physical education program. For students with disabilities who are receiving APE, and students who are participating in the general PE program with accommodations/modifications, a continuum of placement options may include one or more of the following:

  • General physical education setting
  • General PE setting with accommodations/modifications
  • General PE setting with assistance from staff and/or APE specialist
  • A separate PE class setting with peers and additional staff as needed

What Are the Goals of Adapted PE?

All goals are based on individual basis, according to students’ individual needs and IEP goals, but I try to incorporate some or/all of the following:

  1. Teaching body awareness, flexibility, muscular strength and coordination
  2. The most well-known goal of any physical education class is to promote movement – but there's more to this aspiration than breaking students out of a stationary lifestyle. ...
  3. Promoting Physical Fitness as Fun.
  4. Exposing students to new aspects of fitness and skills.
  5. Developing Teamwork, Sportsmanship, and Cooperation.
  6. Teaching nutrition, hygiene and overall healthy lifestyle.
  7. Improving cardiovascular endurance

Grades

Students’ grades are based on daily participation and cooperation. We follow the same grading scale as WFHS district.

Grading Scale:

93 – 100 = A

85 – 92  =  B

75 – 84  =  C

67 – 74  = D

0 – 66   =  F
