    1. The pebble is half covered in sand because it came from the desert. I think the author says it is “speckled as an egg” because the pebble looked like it had spots or specks of sand on it just like some eggs look speckled.

    1. Mom runs to put the wildflowers in water because they are wilting. Wilting means that the flowers are bending over because they need more water. They’re thirsty.
