Writing -

Last week, I introduced opinion writing by sharing a story and 2 videos.  An opinion is what you think or feel. When you write an opinion, you want to persuade or convince someone to feel or think the same as you. In order to persuade, you need to give reasons, which is the same thing as answering the question, “Why?”

  • Start with an introduction where you state your opinion. Use starters like “ In my opinion,” “I believe”, “I prefer”

  • Next support your opinion with at least 3 reasons

  • My example: "In my opinion, ice cream is the best food. Ice cream is very sweet and creamy. It can come in many flavors. You can eat ice cream in a bowl with toppings or a cone with sprinkles."

1. Please watch the following 2 videos:

2.  Complete the following prompt:

What do you think is the best food and why?  Include an opening sentence stating your opinion and 3 reasons to support your opinion.

Africa makes three.

Writing -

On Tuesday, you watched videos that showed how to plan out your writing and start your introduction. Some of you sent pictures of your writing.  Good Job! So far, I’ve heard that fruit salad, pancakes, and candy are the best foods! Today, you will be focusing on adding more to your reasons (like using “juicy” words) and writing a conclusion.

  • Start with an introduction where you state your opinion. Use starters like “ In my opinion,” “I believe”, “I prefer”

  • Next support your opinion with at least 3 reasons

  • Then write a conclusion

  • My example: "In my opinion, ice cream is the best food. Ice cream is very sweet and creamy. It can come in many flavors. You can eat ice cream in a bowl with toppings or in a cone with sprinkles. Can you think of anything better than ice cream? It is the best food! There is nothing better on a hot summer day than a cold bowl of ice cream!"

1. Please watch the following 2 videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1e8Zg-fYgE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xo9C8BxgWE

2.  Now go back to your writing from Tuesday. Try adding a little more to your 3 reasons.  Also make sure you go back and add a conclusion, just like I did with my example.

Science/Social Studies - Please read the book Continents in my World (on Capstone Interactive website) and write 1 fact you found interesting about each continent (kind of like “Wow! That’s a Cool Fact” paper in school).

  • The vowel team ‘oe’ is found only at the end of words like in “toe”.
