WHAT IS HUMAN GEOGRAPHY????
Human Geography is more than just studying location; rather it is the study of globalization, migration, political borders, development, urbanization, agriculture, industrialization, and so much more!! One of the major components of APHG is examining how the concept of globalization, or how the world is interconnected: in other words, places that once seemed remote and isolated now interact with other regions daily. As we examine our world through the Human Geographer's lens, we will also evaluate the the economic, political, social, and environmental impact that various issues have within and among various regions of the world.
"The why and what of where"
Since Human Geography is a geography course, we will need to understand the purpose and role of maps; however, instead of simply memorizing place names and locations, we will analyze how maps are often inaccurate. Oftentimes, we believe that if it is labeled on a map, that must be how it looks on Earth, but as we delve into the course, we will have a better understanding that maps are inaccurate--in fact, some would say they lie!! Cartographers, or mapmakers, face the challenge of flattening a portion of the Earth, which leads to distorted image of the Earth (For example, Antarctica is not flat and long!). As we delve into the course, we will have a better grasp on how maps are meant to show a something specific about the Earth and not necessarily meant to accurately represent the Earth. Maps tell a story, and throughout the course, we will be tasked with trying to understand exactly what story the cartographer is trying to tell.
