Writing
During Writing Workshop, there will be explicit instruction on how to write a narrative, story elements and the writing process itself. Reading and word study will be incorporated into our writing lessons. Some lessons will be for the whole group. Others will be for small groups, as the specific needs of the children become apparent. Writing conferences will occur one to one. During those conferences, each child will have an opportunity to share his/her writing with me. We will then work on an area of focus specific to that child.
Some areas of focus will include:
Punctuation
Capitalization
Spacing
Forming Sentences
Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives
Asking ourselves: Does it make sense?
Thinking ahead: We will be working on some elements of story writing throughout the year.
Writing a story with a clear beginning, middle and end.
Adding characters to the story.
Creating stories that make sense.
Writing Personal Narratives.
Writing pattern Books.
Writing an All About Book.
Writing an Informational Book.
Writing a How-To Book.
Writing a Short Story.
Writing a Persuasive Piece.
Writing Poetry.
Understanding that stories have a setting, plot ( on a simple level) and characters
Rereading your story to check for capitalization, spelling and punctuation (editing)
Rereading and changing - adding to or deleting from- your story to make it better or clearer (revision)
When your child is writing at home, ask them the following questions:
Where do writers get their ideas?
What materials do writers need?
What begins a sentence? What ends a sentence?
What does our room look and sound like when we are writing?
How can you make your illustrations match your words?
Where can you find words in your classroom?
Why is it important for writers to reread their work?
Why do writers take away and add to their writing?
