The RACE Strategy

 

We will learn how to use the RACE strategy to respond to reading comprehension questions. This strategy will be used as the children move through the grade levels.  Answering open-ended response questions is an important task in all grades.  We start off by Restating the question, Answering the question, Citing examples from the text, then Explaining or Extending our answers using prior knowledge or personal experience.  

 

RACE Strategy for answering Questions about Reading:

 

RESTATE the question.

 

Reread and restate the question in your topic sentence.

 

ANSWER the question that is being asked.

 

Use your answer to write your topic sentence.

 

CITE evidence from the text.

 

Use examples and evidence from the text to support your answer.

 

EXTEND your answer.

 

Explain your answer using your own prior knowledge and examples from your personal experience.
