Literacy:

Please read with your child every night.  It is important to read to them and to listen to them read as well.  You can also encourage your child to keep a personal writing journal.

Reading is Thinking!!

The following are skills we are always practicing:

Reading Smoothly

Building our Reading Stamina

Read to Self

Read to Someone

Thinking while reading!

Sitting EEKK

Putting books away properly

Making Connections

 Making Inferences

Questions to ask your child:

What are 3 ways to read a book?

Where do we read in our classroom?

How do we choose books to read?

How can you retell a book?

How can you chunk words?

How do we care for books?

Where do we keep our books?

How do we put books away so others can find them?

Reading Strategies:  What do you do if you come to a tricky word?

STOP if it doesn't look right, sound right, or make sense.

Get your Mouth Ready and say the first letter sound and read through the word.

Look for Key Words and Picture Clues.

Blend:  Say the first two letters.

Chunk:  Look for parts you know.

Think of a word that looks the same and rhymes.

Try a different sound for the vowel.

Reread:  Go back and try again.  What would make sense?

Stretch it out.
