WELCOME TO GRAPHIC DESIGN AND DIGITAL ARTS!
If you are in my class, somewhere you have shown an interest in creating something cool on the computer. And to that I say: welcome to the beginning of your Graphic Design and Digital Arts career. I hope you enjoy your time here.
Before we go forward on this pleasure cruise, you are probably asking yourself: what the heck is Graphic Design?
- Graphic Design is about communicating a message or an idea in a simple and easy to understand form – using color, shapes, and typography.
- Graphic Design used to be called Commercial Art and is commonly known today as Visual Communication. It comprises corporate design (logos, letterheads, company reports), poster design, book and magazine Illustration and layout, Packaging, Stamp Design, Typography, Web Design, Computer Games, etc.
- The term Graphic Design was first used in 1922 by William Addison Dwiggins, the American illustrator, typographer, calligrapher and book designer.
- A Graphic Designer creates visual solutions that communicate a message or concept to a target audience. They usually work to a brief agreed with the client.
- The modern graphic designer not only needs to be able to draw (or thumbnail sketch), but should also have working skills in digital imaging and desktop publishing software. They need to be creative, up to date with the latest stylistic developments in their field and possess a professional attitude to costing and time management.
And what exactly is Digital Art? I'm glad you asked:
