5th and 6th graders have built a foundation in the past grades that have led them to a much more detailed curriculum.
5th graders have a quick review of the Elements and jump right into the Principles (both have pages devoted to them on this site). While covering the Principles, students will be introduced to many different artists. This will prepare them for the following year.
6th graders have a quick review of the Elements and Principles. This year is the culmination of all the work they have done since Kindergarten. In their 6th grade year students will learn to critique art in an informed and educated way. They will begin by critiquing the art of the masters. Students will need to use the vocabulary the have built upon in past years to give their opinion on the artwork. After practicing on famous artwork, students will critique each other's work. They will need to give positive feedback on their classmate's work.
As in the past grades, students will also be discussing topics covered in their other classes. For example, a lesson may be about learning different landscapes but the subject of their art might be related to a place they are learning about in Social Studies.
In Summary, 5th and 6th graders will learn:
-the Elements and Principles
-about a wide variety of artists
-to continue practicing different techniques with a variety of materials
-topics related to subjects taught in other classes
-to critique in an effective, logical, and positive way
