Students have a lot to learn in art by 6th grade so the younger grades focus on the basics of art.
Kindergarten through 2nd grade will practice using different tools to create their art. They will draw, color, paint, sculpt, and take part in many different crafts.
The students will cover many of the elements of art (to which I devoted a page to on this site) in detail. The Elements they will practice with the most are line, shape, color, and texture. These 4 Elements are the foundation they will need to continue their art education through the years.
Though the goal of art class is to learn about artists and creating art, the subjects of our work are centered around topics the students will be learning in their other classes. For example, a Kindergarten lesson for the day may be about practicing their painting but before beginning to work we will discuss in depth the subject of their art (like different animals, the alphabet, numbers, etc.). By intergrating information taught in their other classes, students develop a deeper understanding of the subject and are creating art of which they will have a strong understanding.
In Summary, K-2nd grade art is about learning:
-Line
-Shape
-Color
-Texture
-Different ways of creating art
-Artists
-A wide variety of subjects
-having fun while working hard!
