Hey everyone!! Welcome to Week 5 of Distance Learning!! We are almost done with a review of the chapters from our textbook and we should have completed all the skills videos. So this week we will complete the chapters and review some of the more difficult skills. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. You can reach me via email or Remind. 1. Read and review chapters 1-4 and complete the chapter reviews at the end of each chapter. Review terminology from each chapter. 

   Ch 4-Communication Challenges: Review communication guidelines for visual impairment, hearing impairment, anxiety, fear, depression, anger, combative behavior, inappropriate sexual behavior, disorientation, confusion, comatose patients and for residents with functional barriers. Review defense mechanisms.

   Ch 3-Communication Skills:  Review types of communciation (verbal and nonverbal), review barriers to communication and how culture affects communication. Review medical terminology and abbreviations listed in book and on print out given in class. Review military time and how to convert from standard to military time. Review what is included in the resident chart and guidelines for documentation. Review what an MDS is. Describe how to observe and report accurately. Review the NA's role in care planning and care conferences. Review Incident reports and recording one. Review telephone etiquette, resident call system, change of shift reports, and how to organize work and manage time.

   Ch 2-Ethical and Legal Issues: review terms law (civil/criminal), ethics and etiquette. Review ethical /professional behavior. Review the NA code of ethics and OBRA. Review closely the RESIDENTS' RIGHTS. Review types of abuse and neglect and signs and symptoms of each. Review steps taken if a NA is suspected of abuse. Review what an Ombudsman's role is, HIPAA, PSDA, and Advance Directives(living will, durable POA for healthcare and DNR)

   Ch 1-The Nursing Assistant in LTC: Review types of healthcare settings, Medicare vs. Medicaid, types of residents in LTC facilities. Review professionalism and examples of professional behavior, qualities that NA's must have, and  gooming guidelines. Review the care team and their roles. Review the Chain of Command in a healthcare facility and delegation. Review methods of nursing care and person centered care. Review  policy vs procedure and the LTC survey process.

 

2. Watch videos for skill practice on Youtube 4your CNA and practice CNA skills if able

   You may watch any videos that you feel you may need more review on.  Please review Handwashing

   Other videos that are more challenging include

   -Denture care

   -perineal care

   -catheter care

   -Bedpan

   -Feeding

   -Partial bedbath

I would encourage you to practice taking pulse and respirations for 1 minute using a watch with a second hand.

 

3. Continue to do CNA practice test online if possible.
