What is Square 1 Art?    Square 1 Art is a fundraiser for MAES Visual Arts.  Each student was given a project in art class, which was done on a square template.  The image that the student created is displayed on the cover of their own personalized catalog and also on their FREE gift of 20 stickers.  Our art department will receive 33% of the profits made from orders and that money will be used to purchase such items as printmaking supplies, clay supplies as well as other materials for students to use in the art room.  The items for purchase in the catalog make great personalized gifts for any occasion, including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, and even Christmas!    All orders are either online or by phone.  If you order now, you will not pay shipping/handling.  The window for ordering closes next Wednesday, April 23rd.  All orders will come to MAES the week before Mother’s Day!

9.7.18  BLOG entry #1

The first month of school is quickly behind us as artists move from learning routines, rules, and expectations to their first units of study.  Currently, we are all learning about the first element of art:  LINE.  Kindergarten artists have practiced using crayon and marker correctly as they learning about all kinds of lines!  Through song, games, stories, movement, and paper practice, they are on their way to putting lines together to make SHAPE.   First grade artists are using 3 or more types of the same line to create line pattern through the book, Manana, Iguana.  Second grade artists compared the paintings of Piet Mondrian to two different cartoons to look for similarities.  They are also learning a song and movement to learn types of straight line.  After much practice, they worked on a line paper collage with a twist!  Third grade artists have looked at the art of Piet Mondrian to review the three types of straight line (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal).  After playing the "Echo Drawing Game", they are on their way to filling in the organic shapes with color using crayon.  Artists are learning crayon techniques to make their art look like the art of contemporary artist, Don Marco.  Fourth grade artists compared the paintings of Piet Mondrian to the work of Victor Vasarely.  After sketching 4 different types of op art, they have made a final selection for their project.  Artists in fourth grade are also learning correct marker technique.  Finally, fifth grade artists have claimed their working art portfolio and their first sketch book for the year.  They compared the art of Piet Mondrian to that of comtemporary artist, Frank Stella.  Artists will be learning correct crayon, marker, colored pencil, and painting techniques in the coming weeks!
