This rubric is designed to score the actors using a scale of  0-4; with (4) being the highest achievement and (0) being the lowest .

 

Performance Projects will be graded on the following items:

 

A:  Memorization:  To commit to memory.  To know by “heart”.  To learn the content.

            4 = completely memorized, fluent.

            3 = accomplished at memorization.

            2 = some omissions or changes.

            1 = significant omissions or changes.

            0 = not memorized.

 

B: Vocalization:  The proper use of vocal techniques.  This would include: inflections, volume, proper breathing and support, diction, articulation, etc..

            4 = clear, articulate, inflective. Exemplary control of vocal techniques.

            3 =  has control of techniques.

            2 = demonstrates some control of techniques.

            1 = demonstrates minimal control of techniques.

            0 = non-audible, monotone

 

C:  Analysis: The discovery of meaning in the dramatic literature.  Uncovering the playwrights intent using Stanislavski Technique guidelines.  This would include:  finding the given circumstances of who, relationship, where, when, action (to-do’s), moment before, objectives and obstacles etc…

            4 = Beats, objectives, actions and circumstances were clearly defined and

            appropriate for the material. Analysis is complete and well thought out.

            3 = has understanding of the script and its content.

            2 = demonstrates some understanding of the script and content.

            1 = minimal understanding of script and the content.

            0 = no understanding, work not done.

 

D:  Interpretation: The application of the acting choices to the performance.

 

  •  Emotional connection to the material. The sensitivity and understanding of the material is evident in the acting choices. The actor’s commitment to the piece. The believability and authentic behavior of the actor as the character.

          4 = understanding and appropriate connection to the material.

          3 = some understanding and connection to the material.

          2 = demonstrates basic understanding of the emotional life of the material.

          1 = no emotional connection with the material.

 

  • Physical life of the character. The ability to move with the piece. This would include appropriate blocking and character choices of weight/time/space, uses props and costumes.

4 = exemplary use of movement and physical character choice techniques.

3 = demonstrates control of the techniques.

2 = demonstrates basic physical techniques and connection with the material.

1 = demonstrates minimal control of physical techniques.

0 = no connection and total lack of movement.

 

  • Using the given circumstances.  Who, where, what, relationship, objectives etc…

4 =  Exemplary use of the given circumstances. Objective was played with urgency and all elements were used to inform the actor choices.

3 = demonstrates an understanding of the circumstances.

2 =  demonstrates some basic understanding.

1 = demonstrates minimal understanding of the circumstances.

0 = no understanding of circumstances.

 

E:  Rehearsal:  To repeat. The time spent working on material to learn it and prepare with scene partner. The “making discoveries” period.   This includes: working with partner, being present at rehearsals, using time wisely, being organized, having props and costumes as the scene requires etc…

4 =  was always prepared, worked generously with scene partner,  used time wisely, had the props and costumes for rehearsal.

3 = demonstrated good rehearsal skills.

2 = was occasionally ready for rehearsal.

1 = minimal rehearsal time.

0 = no rehearsal or preparation.

 

F: Class participation:  To share, be present, show effort and support as an audience member and peer.  This includes: listening, effective observation, willingness to try new things, promptness, etc…

4=always on time, contributes positively to class activities, volunteers for  class exercises, gives informed feedback, is a trustworthy scene partner, and is prepared for the work of the class, homework is turned in on time.

3 = is frequently on time, frequently contributes, most homework in on time, is often prepared.

2 = is occasionally ready for class work, occasionally volunteers, occasionally turns in homework

1 =  minimal participation in class
 0 = no homework, does not contribute
