Birthday Celebrations

As many of you are aware, we are no longer celebrating birthdays with sweet treats such as cupcakes, donuts, etc.  There are still many other ways for your child to celebrate his/her birthday in the classroom. Here is a list of activities for your child to choose from to celebrate a birthday.

Bring in the completed “It’s All About Me” poster (provided by teacher)

Please choose 1:

  • Guest reader - read a favorite book to our class

(email me to set up a time)

  • Show and Tell-Bring in a bag of objects or pictures that are special to you and share it.
  • Bring in pencils, bookmarks, or stickers for class members (NO FOOD PLEASE). (20 students – 9 girls, 11 boys)

Donate a book to our class library in your honor.

Student Allergies and Classroom Celebrations

In order to adhere to the district Wellness Policy and the requirements of the State of New Jersey and the District Life-Threatening Food Allergy Protocol, the BRRSD school district will not celebrate birthdays with sugar-based food items such as cupcakes, donuts, cakes cookies, etc. As a district, our goal is to create a culture that is not solely focused on requiring food at all celebrations.  Brief celebrations for students generally occur one time per month and follow the BRRSD Wellness Guidelines.  These guidelines and policies can be found on the district website below.

Celebrations may vary by grade level and building, however, food is not permitted as part of the birthday celebrations.  Parents should not distribute anything to students.  Party goody bags are not permitted.

The following may be permitted by class and/or school.  Students may be recognized on their birthday in the daily announcements and awarded a birthday ribbon.  The class may celebrate by arranging with the teacher a 10-15 minute read-aloud by a family member or special guest.  The birthday celebration may include that student choosing a game to play on the playground.

Holiday celebrations may occur up to four times per school year.  Food may be served at these celebrations, but must be fresh fruit, vegetables, or healthy snacks.  No sugar-based items.
