Silent Sustained Reading

SSR

You get to pick your independent reading books for these assignments.  Please refer to our directions for your grade-level expectations.

Reminders for All Grades

  • SSR book conferences will take place throughout the year.  Conferences begin in October.  Conferences are a lot like reading benchmarks.  So, if you have ever sat for a benchmark assessment like F&P, you will do just fine in a conference.
  • Conferences may be adjusted due to weather, assemblies, schedule changes, etc.
  • SSR books MUST be in class at all times.
  • If you have finished a book, it is a good idea to go back and make informal annotations to more easily confer with me.  You may NOT pick out a new book on a day for SSR.  You should have one ready.
  • You MUST finish a book in order to have a conference.
  • The conference is not counted as part of the quiz grade.  It is only done to build articulation and discussion skills.
  • The formal annotations count as a quiz grade.
  • Please refer to the directions on your Google Classroom page for additional information.

1.  Read your book regularly.  Even small amounts of time count!

2.  Consider different types of text-related questions.  Guide your reading with these questions in mind.

3.  Pay attention to our lessons.  Lessons provide the closest examples of text-related questions.

4.  Use Post-its or feel free to write on another medium.  Keep track of the page numbers on which you have made annotations.

5.  Have your book and annotations with you on the scheduled SSR day!

Note: It is absolutely acceptable to first read your book thoroughly for enjoyment!  You can make annotations after you have done so.
