Spanish II Course Goals
Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I.  Spanish II is a study of the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through the exploration of various topics. Students will continue to further develop their proficiency in Spanish through the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The goal of this course is to instill in students an understanding and appreciation for Hispanic culture around the world and to provide students with the confidence to express needs, thoughts and ideas in the Spanish language. This course prepares the student for an advanced study of Spanish or another foreign language.

Course objectives

1. Understand the differences in advanced grammar structure between English and Spanish and to implement them correctly.

2. Develop an everyday working vocabulary that will enable them to communicate and express their thoughts and ideas in Spanish.

3. Read short essays, poems, newspapers, and other types of authentic written material.

4. Explore geography, history, and literature of Spanish-speaking countries through Internet activities, projects, shorts readings, and current events.

Suggested Course Materials

  • Pens- only blue or black for graded assignments and  highlighters
  • Three-ring binder (1 inch) with dividers.
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper (no spiral notebook paper accepted)
  • Textbook and workbook (provided by school)
  • $3 supply fee for future projects.

Your notebook should be set up in five divisions:  bell work, Unit 1, 2, 3,  handouts and  workbook.  Teacher will safe-guard all graded material in a pocket folder in the classroom.  This folder is accessible to the student or parent at any time.

Participation

Participation is a key ingredient to learning a foreign language.  Taking an active role in the classroom will aid retention of material presented.  A student must be prepared, pay attention, repeat vocabulary, participate in class activities and do written assignments.
Encourage your students to study hard because it may save you money.  Many of the foreign language students at Albany High School test out of Foreign language 101 and some as much as 202 (3 semesters!).

Classroom Policies- Do

1. Be on time.
2. Be prepared.
3. Be attentive (no sleeping, writing notes or doing homework assignments for other classes) and participate!
4. Be respectful of the instructor and fellow classmates.
5. Follow dress code.
6. Hand in work on time because late assignments will not be accepted.
7. Speak Spanish, French, Italian, or any other foreign language as much as possible.

Classroom Policies-Don’ts

1.  Drinks other than water are not accepted.
2.  Interrupting the teacher to the point of stopping her from doing her job will get you to the office fast!
3.  Do not put off make-up work!!!!

Consequences
Breaking the code of conduct to the point of stopping a lesson or creating a disturbance such that the instructor is not able to do her job may be cause for immediate referral to the office.

Other infractions will be dealt with as such:
1. A verbal warning
2. You will sign  “the chart” and a one-on-one conference will take place after class with the teacher.
3. Phone call home to parent and a written referral to the office.

Grading Scale

93-100                   A

86-92                     B

76-85                     C

66-75                     D

under 66                F

Students will be graded as follows: Major Assessments 40%, Assessed for Accuracy 35%, Paricicpation/Completion 10% and End of Semester(midterm and final) 15%.  If a student is absent a 0 will be placed in the assignment category until he or she turns in the make-up work.

Attendance/Late Work /Make-Up Policy

Attendance in a language class is extremely important! Oral proficiency can only be attained with strong participation. Frequent absences will cause you to fall behind. Keeping up with notes, bellwork, and tests becomes a high-level stress situation for the student and the teacher. Try to avoid missing class by scheduling appointments after 2:30 if possible.  If missing class is unavoidable and excused, the student will be asked to make-up test upon return. Test dates are posted 1 week in advance. After five days no make-up work will be accepted. One make-up day for tests will be offered before the end of each term at 6:30 in the morning.   If the absence is NOT excused, make-up work will NOT be accepted.  Unexcused absences exceeding 5 times will result in possible failure of the course.

Parents
Encourage your student to do his work well and in a timely fashion. Bonus is not a way to earn good grades.  What you earn is what you receive as a grade.  Instead, visit the website realidades.com and use the materials available to do well on quizzes and tests.   There are flashcards with pronunciations, practice quizzes, and activities.   The student should spend a minimum of 15 minutes a night practicing with the extra-curricular activities available online

I am looking forward to teaching everyone this year. With positive group work ethics and input we can make this a great experience.  This is their first assignment worth 10 points. Please return
