Spanish I Course Goals
Spanish I is an introduction to the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through the exploration of various topics. Students will begin developing their proficiency in Spanish through the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The study of any foreign language increases their understanding of the English language and higher ACT scores have been documented in students who have had another language. The goals of this course are to instill in students an understanding and appreciation for their own culture, as well as Hispanic culture around the world and to provide students with the confidence to begin expressing ideas and needs in the Spanish language.
Course objectives

- Develop an everyday working vocabulary that will enable them to communicate in the target language.

Participation
Participation is a key ingredient to learning a foreign language. A student must be prepared, pay attention, repeat vocabulary, participate in class activities, and do written assignments when asked. Encourage your student to study diligently because it may save you money. Many of the foreign language students at AHS test out of Spanish 101 and some as much as 202! That’s four college semesters!
Classroom Policies- Do’s
- Be on time and speak as much Spanish as you can!
- Be prepared with paper, pencils, highlighters, etc.
- Be attentive (no sleeping, writing notes or doing homework assignments for other classes).
- Be respectful of the instructor and fellow classmates.
- Follow dress code.
- Assignments are due on the due date and will not be accepted late.
Classroom Policies-Don’ts
1. Drinks other than water are not accepted.
2. Stopping the teacher from doing her job will get you to the office fast!
3. Don’t put off make-up work!
Consequences
Breaking the code of conduct to the point of stopping a lesson or creating a disturbance such that the instructor is not able to do her job may be cause for immediate referral to the office.
Other infractions will be dealt with as such: (1,2,3 and you’re out!)
- A verbal warning (1st offence)
- Name will be written on “the behavior form” and one on one conference with teacher.
- Phone call home and student will be “written up” for disciplinary action.
Attendance/Late Work /Make-Up Policy
Attendance in a language class is extremely important! Oral proficiency can only be attained with strong participation. Frequent absences will cause you to fall behind. Keeping up with notes, bellwork, and tests becomes a high-level stress situation for the student and the teacher. Try to avoid missing class.
If missing class is unavoidable and excused, the student is required to make up missed work or tests within the 5-day time frame. The student will not be reminded, it is up to him/her to keep track. Test dates are posted one week in advance. After five days no make-up work will be allowed.
If the absence is NOT excused, make-up work will NOT be accepted.
Unexcused absences exceeding 8 times will result in possible failure of the course.
Grading Scale
93-100 A
85-92 B
75-84 C
67-74 D
under 66 F
Students will be graded as follows: Major Assessments 40%/ assessed for accuracy 30%, Participation 15%, and Midterm/Final 15%. If a student is absent a 0 will be placed in the assignment category until he or she turns in the make-up work.
Parents
Encourage your student to do his work well and in a timely fashion. Bonus is not a way to earn good grades. Instead, visit the website realidades.com and use the materials available to do well on quizzes and tests. There are flashcards with pronunciations, practice quizzes, and activities. The student should spend a minimum of 15 minutes a night practicing with the extra-curricular activities available online
I am looking forward to teaching everyone this year. With positive group work ethics and input we can make this a great time. This is their first assignment worth 10 points. Please return.
