ACCELERATE YOUR READING
You are highly encouraged to READ, READ, READ!
WHY READ?
Reading and rereading books increases IQ, general knowledge, spoken vocabulary, and reading fluency. The Accelerated Reader, or AR, program is a great way to monitor your child's comprehension of what he/she is reading while allowing them to read based purely on their interests and reading level.
Your child will take the STAR reading test in the computer lab at the beginning of the year. Each student's AR reading goals are set based on this score. They are individually tailored to your child.
WHERE DO WE GET the BOOKS?
Books may come from school, the public library, or your personal library. Not all books are part of the AR program, meaning some don't have quizzes in the program.
At school AR books are marked with special stickers, but what about at the public library, at home, at a book store, or in a book order?
You may go to http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx, if you want to check a book title to find out if it's an AR book.
Enter the title of the book or the author’s name in the search bar. It will tell you the reading level of the book, the point value, and other valuable information as well.
Example: This book, How to Get Fabulously Rich, is BL 4.5, or book level 4.5, which means 4th grade, fifth month. It is worth 3.0 points. There is also a summary of the book and it says it is book #3 in a series.

Finished your book? NOW, TAKE A QUIZ!
Students may take quizzes on books they read anywhere. Computers are available in the labs, the library, and in our classroom. Unfortunately quizzes can't be taken at home.
Each student is required to earn a minimum number of points by the end of each nine week period to attend the school's AR party. For every book they read that is labeled as an AR book, students can take a test in our school library or in the classroom before school. They earn points for correct answers. The reading levels and point values for each book are set by the Accelerated Reader program Livingston Parish uses, not by the teacher.
Each child should be careful to choose books that are on their reading level. To determine this, students should try to read the first page of a book they plan to check out before getting it. If it’s too difficult to get through the first page without struggling, then they should make another choice.
These points may earn rewards for your child in our classroom and from the librarian at the end of the quarter and/or the year.
To check on your child’s AR points from home you may log-in using the student’s username: student number and password: initials a t https://hosted127.renlearn.com/210581/HomeConnect/
Still need extra help in finding books or practicing comprehension? How can you motivate your child to read?
If you have access to the internet a great resource is the website www.bookadventure.org I love this site and have used it with my own children for years. Run by Sylvan, this site allows parents and students to create accounts to personalize their experience. Children can put in their age, grade, interest preferences, and reading level to generate a reading list of books tailored to them. They can copy or print titles to arm themselves when going to the library, so they know what to look for or check out. The library can be an overwhelming place when you don't know what to look for. Finding books on level and on topics that are self chosen can help make reading interesting and fun.
Students can also take comprehension quizzes on books they've read and earn points for their scores which lead to rewards. The company offers rewards and parents can also creat their own rewards for their children. You can monitor student accounts via e-mail updates.
