Neville High School - Room 514

4th and 5th Periods

Dear Students,

Welcome back to Neville for another year. As with every new year, the opportunity for new beginnings is presented. Good attitudes and initial first impressions are vital for a successful school year. A strong focus on school and a vision for your future must be taking place right now.

This course is a one year course with two major areas of study.  The majority of the time will be spent studying the aspects that make the workd work and how nations and cultures interact to create interdependency.  Since this is a gifted class, you will be challenged beyond the normal classes. Therefore you must expect an increased work load inside and outside of class.  The AP test is Tuesday May 7.  It is required that you take the test to receive AP credit, regardless of your actual score.

Grades will be taken from a variety of assessments and assignments.  Each chapter test will be a simulated AP-style Multiple Choice exam.  Often there will be a simulated AP-style Free Response Question (FRQ).  Some will be worked as a class, others will be peer evaluated, and even others will be a true assessment.  There will also be map quizzes throughout the year.  Every country will be tested at some point, so the entire globe will be covered.  We will have vocabulary homework assignments that will assist in preparation for vocabulary quizzes.  Each chapter will also have a review to be turned in before the test.  Missed tests and quizzes will need to be made up in a timely manner, according to school policy.  While homework assignments may be turned in for late grades, there will be a time limit on how late is allowed.  There is no extra credit work, so all grades must be earned in the present.

As a AP class, I shouldn’t have to go into great lengths about behavior in class. I will just expect proper behavior and you should have it in return. A few points to cover however: Tardiness is a no-no. Be in the class on time. Be prepared every day. Not having what you need is the same as being tardy. Be active. The best way to learn is to get your hands dirty. Never be too shy to answer questions, ask questions, or voice your opinions. Do all assignments. Prepare yourself everyday. Follow the dress code.  All phones and smart watches will be stored during class.

Materials: a three-ring binder with plenty of paper, blue or black pens (no gel pens or pencils), one box of tissue, if you can donate. Your textbook should be kept at home, as we should have a class set at school.
