Course Syllabus
Course Description:
This course presents a study of basic medical terminology. Prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, special ending, plural forms, abbreviations, and symbols are included in the content. A programmed learning, word building system will be used to learn word parts that are used to construct or analyze new terms. This provides the opportunity to decipher unfamiliar terms and check their spelling. Emphasis is placed on spelling, definition, usage and pronunciation. Abbreviations will be introduced as related terms are presented.
Instructional Philosophy:
Medical Terminology as a subject matter lends itself to the use of manipulatives as well as hands-on discovery. It will introduce students to the medical field. Classroom activities will include reading, research, projects, and problem solving skills. High quality work is expected and students will be expected to do work that meets the standards.
Course Goals:
Students will be able to use abbreviations, suffixes, and combing forms to write medical terms.
Students will be able to write the meanings of all terms and construct singular and plural forms of terms.
Students will be able to recognize word parts, write the meaning, and spell each term correctly pertaining to each body system of the body.
Students will be able to pronounce all terms correctly.
Students will pass the Medical Terminology Exam (80%).
