Course Description:

 

Nursing Assistant Class is designed as a course of study that includes a classroom instruction and clinical experience component.  The nursing assistant course is offered to all students enrolled in the medical/health pathway who in interested in the nursing or medical profession.  The course prepares students on a college preparatory level.  The course is designed to train the student in nursing care skills.  Upon successful completion, the student receives a nursing assistant certificate.  Skills are presented by lecture and lab.  The course teaches vital signs, bed making, bedbaths, personal hygiene, body mechanics, transporting of patients, specimen collections, warm and cold applications, pre- and post- operative care, special treatments, and communications.

 

Objectives:

 

Classroom: To prepare nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term and/or acute care facilities.

Clinicals: The students will proficiently perform basic nurse aide skills working with residents in a healthcare environment.

 

Training:

  1. Consist of no less than 108 hours of classroom
  2. 70.5 hours will be supervised practical training in a laboratory incorporated into the chapters
  3. Sixty hours on site clinical experience (nursing home, acute hospitals, and/or other health care facilities)
  4. Forty hours of the sixty hours of clinical experience in nursing home

 

Pre-Requisite:  Medical Terminology & Health Science Courses - C

                         Biology

                         Senior Status

                         2.5 GPA

 

Up to date on immunizations including Hepatitis B series ( 3 injections )

Meningitis Injection

TB Skin Test

Physical Examination

Background Check

 

Instructional Philosophy:

 

Nursing Assistant Class as a subject matter lends itself to the use of manipulative as well as hands-on discovery.  In addition to teacher led examples, students will be encouraged to peer tutor and work together in groups to better understand new concepts and skills.  High quality work is expected and students will be expected to perform skills.  Classroom activities will include reading, discussion, research, skills, and problem solving.

Students will be a Certified Nursing Assistant

To develop a high level of career awareness in the health field

To enable students to identify good health care practices and resources needed to maintain good health care.

Quizzes and Tests Weekly

Successfully complete skills in lab (25 skills)

Successfully complete clinicals

 

Prometric

Pass state certification exam (80%)

Perform three skills satisfactory
