Do I have to sign up for field day?
The short answer is no. If you do not like to give out your information, you can still participate and share your photos through Washington Twp school district Facebook page using the a hashtag that should have been emailed to you. Reason you should sign-up – US Games and all of the companies of Varsity Brands are committed to helping you make the OPEN National Field Day event festive and fun for your entire community. As a part of this, they are donating 5 prizes to be given away to 5 registered participants. The top prize is a $500 gift certificate to US Games! Second prize is a $250 gift certificate and 3 others will win $100 gift certificates. You must register to be eligible to win. We're asking our ADULT community members to sign up for the OPEN National Field Day for two reasons. First, we want to make sure you are informed and have all of the information you need to fully participate with your students. Second, we want to know who is participating and where in the world you live in order to measure our impact and focus our program offerings. You can also print your own certificates for participating.

Family/Parent Letter for our Virtual Filed Day
Dear Families,
We’re excited to announce that our school community will be participating in the
OPEN National Field Day event on Friday, May 8th!
Field Day is an important tradition at our school. It is a significant day for our students and our staff, and we feel that in these incredibly challenging times this national event is a unique way that we can stay connected as a community and support one another in a fun and meaningful way.
OPEN (Online Physical Education Network) is a national public service organization that provides curriculum and training support to more than 90,000 teachers in all 50 states. We will be using their resources and social media network to help us organize our school’s participation in #NationalFieldDay.
All #NationalFieldDay events are designed to be done indoors or outdoors using common household items. You won’t be asked to purchase any specialized equipment or supplies.
Here’s how it will work:
- Our school is now registered as a participant in this event. Families can choose to register as well, but it’s not a requirement.
- The event website is www.openphysed.org/nationalfieldday.
- As a part of registration, we will receive Field Day Friday email updates each week with new resources that we will share with you.
- You can also find updates via social media using #NationalFieldDay.
- By April 24 your family will receive a set of event cards that you can use to begin practicing. You will also receive a participant practice sheet for tracking progress.
- Your family will be asked to choose a minimum of 4 events to complete on Field Day. However, you may complete as many events as you’d like to.
- From May 3 thru 7, we will follow #NationalFieldDay and watch the Field Day Torch travel across the country in preparation for the main event.
- On May 8, our entire school will participate in events, complete an official score card, share photos and videos through our school’s approved platforms, and participate nationally on social media using #NationalFieldDay.
- After the event, your student will submit their scorecard via Google Drive (or other school approved method) to their physical education teacher.
- Every student that completes at least 4 events will receive an OPEN National Field Day certificate.
We will continue to send you weekly updates on this fun and festive event. We appreciate your cooperation and are hopeful that your entire family will use it as a fun and meaningful way to be physically active together and with our entire school community.
Stay well,
Mr. Borusovic
Port Colden Physical Education Teacher

I hope everyone had nice spring break and had a chance to adjust to all that is going on around us. Now that everyone is ready to seriously dive in to their fitness goals and really put in 110% effort into being successful. You only get out what you put in. Great effort yields great rewards! If you feel like your not really doing anything but the norm, you need to up the effort or do something much more challenging. Good luck and don't forget to send me your weekly log of your fitness training.

(Repost from April2)Third marking periods grades will be based on all the fitness testing accomplished before we left school. I'm still working on how grades will be determine for the fourth marking period. Only a hand-full of students have submitted assignments since we been home. Please spread the word that the Special Area Teachers are posting assignments for students to complete and its essential for grading purposes. Thank you in advance! For more detailed information about grading, see the "Grading" tab on my home page. Have a great spring break!

I added a Fitness Goal Templatel tab to my home page. There is a blank template that students should ba able to print. Hopefully this will make things a little easier for some who dislike working on computers or excel spread sheets.

Choose your activities wisely. If your goal is to do better in the mile run, pacer test, or jump roping, it would be a good idea to choose something that is similar to the goal for practice. Sometimes even just repeating the same activity everyday for a few weeks is efficient enough. Practice makes perfect!
March 31
Before setting a goal it is important to establish a baseline score. For example, if I choose sit-ups as one of my goals, it would be best to see how many I can get in one minute before I start working on that goal. Lets say I score 30 sit-ups in my test. My new goal maybe getting 35 when I test again in four weeks. I hope this example helps some of you.
March 26 -30
For the next few weeks we are going to set fitness goals. Selecting achievable goals and making a fun circuit learning center is very important especially if its a students first time attempting such a task. Please select two activities from the president's challenge or fitness gram that interest you. Heres a link that may help you design your own circuit training learning center http://shapingamericasfuture.com/archives/325
March 25
Im going to take this moment to plant a seed in your mind on what physical activity or two you would like to improve on? What things would you do that may help you achieve this goal? Start to think about as it is going to be necessary over the next few weeks to have goals in mind to complete the next assignment.
March 24
Moderate to intense exercises/activities cause your body to breath deep and fast. There are many benefits to this reaction such as clearing out harmful microbes/bacteria that can cause illness or lung infections. Check out this website for more benefits: https://www.mntnviewchiro.com/deep-breathing-by-the-mayo-clinic
March 23
Circuit training (Learning centers as kids may know it) is a great way to get your heart pumping. Just choose 5 activities and do each one for a minute. Repeat it 4 times. Example: Push-ups, blurpies, sit-ups, jump rope, and jog in place. Check out this website for more ideas. https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/circuit-training-build-some-muscles-burn-some-fat/
March 20:
You can practice the Pacer fitness gram test almost anywhere outside. Just place an object down on the ground to mark your starting line. Next walk in a straight line for 20 paces/meters (natural steps) and place another object on the ground. Have an adult click on this link https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=fitnessgram+pacer+test+audio&view=detail&mid=182160F7412D6F872975182160F7412D6F872975&FORM=VIRE and have them make the bell sound everytime they hear it so you can run and get to the 2nd object before the bell rings again. Repeat. Headphones or bluetooth speaker could make this easier.
March 19:
Creative ideas for for those of us who dont own every piece of sports equipment. (Kids get parents permission before using household items)
1) Using socks rolled up into a ball makes great dodge balls for indoors
2) Any string or tying differnet pieces of cloth together for a jump rope
3) Using old shirts for bases in kickball
March 18:
Planet Fitness is offeringing free exercise classes online/streaming with professional trainers. Most classes are 20 minutes or less and free to everyone! Everyday at 7 pm on facebook live. The title of the campaign is "United We Move."
March 17:
Adding variety to a fitness program is a good way to keep motivated.
-
Vary the activity. If you are getting bored with walking, try dancing or a combination of differnt exercises.
-
Vary the place. Try a new route for walking or biking or even a different room for your exercises or stretching. By having several options, you can pick one that suits your mood or schedule.
-
Vary the time. Do your exercises at different times and for different amounts of time. If you become bored with your noon walk, try exercising in the early morning or after chores or schoolwork. Instead of doing one 45-minute session, do three 15-minute sessions.
March 16:
Aerobic activity raises your heart rate and keeps it up for a while. This increases the amount of oxygen delivered to your heart and muscles. Over time, this kind of activity benefits your heart, your muscles, your mood and self-esteem, and your amount of energy. It can lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, body fat, anxiety, and depression, and fatigue.
