Psychology in Physical Education:

Train Your Brain

Brain exercise

When we think of Physical Education, we almost exclusively think of the physical skills involved in exercise and sport. As a result, our training tends to ignore the source of our ability to move and perform those same physical skills in the first place, namely, our brain.

Sport Psychology takes what we already know about physical movement and implements the brain and/or mind to facilitate peak performance. By harmonizing mental functions and behaviors with physical skills, our success within a competitive environment becomes amplified.

One technique that harmonizes our mind with our body is called visualization (a.k.a. guided imagery, mental rehearsal/practice). This technique involves playing out what we’d like to occur in real life within the confines of our mind. Visualization can be practiced anywhere and at any time. Simply find a comfortable place and position and go through the motions of any skill, game strategy, or other real-life scenarios.

HOMEWORK QUESTION:

1. What physical skill can you improve upon through visualization exercises?
