Current Events Reports are assigned in order for students to start thinking about the world around them and the connections between those events and their lives. Students can choose articles on any topic they wish as long as they can explain the impact that the event they choose could have on their lives in a potentially significant way directly or indirectly. They are typically due the last Friday of every month.
Students can pick up current events report sheets in class or they can create their own as long as all questions are addressed. A digital copy can be found by clicking the following link: Current Events Report Sheet.doc
Tips:
As you are reading your article ask yourself things like"Will this event affect the way that people work?" "Will this affect my prospects for employment in the future or of people I depend on?" "Could this event change the way that people interact with each other?" These questions by far are not exclusive but the sort of questions that can help you when choosing an article.
News on government polices, legislation, court rulings, campaigns etc are usually a strong choice for articles because of the effect that they can have on society. The same can be said of scientifc breakthroughs and discoveries.
If you can not seem to explain how the event could impact your life than picking another article is probably is good choice. Not being able to explain how the event could impact your life will result in a serious decrease in your grade.
Sporting events, specific weather events, and specific crimes many times turn out to be weak choices for current events reports. This stems from the difficulty of creating a connection between the event and the potential impact they can have on your life because you would need to directly experience them for them to have an impact on you. Sure a win or loss for your favorite sports team could create an emotional effect but will it change the way you live your life in ways mentioned in the first tip. The same for weather events barring any that take place in this region like recent storms.
