Research shows that teachers who successfully support students with disabilities in their classrooms utilize principles of universal design, differentiate their instructional methods and use active learning strategies such as investigational activities, projects, interviews, cooperative learning, visual illustration of concepts, simulations, problem solving activities, etc. In addition, some students may need curriculum adaptations to achieve academic success.
WHAT IS LEAP?
In an effort to increase the time classified elementary students spend with their non-disabled peers the West New York School District has established the Learning Expectations for All Pupils (LEAP) in Public Schools #1, #4 and #6 (Harry L. Bain). Students are assigned to a general education homeroom in their assigned grade. Students remain with their peers for Science, Social Studies, Health, Lunch and non-academic classes (e.g. Physical Education, Art, Music, etc.). During the Language Arts and Mathematics block these students leave the class to be taught by a special education teacher.
SERVICE MODEL
The special education teachers serve as consultants to their general education colleagues for Social Studies, Health and Science. In the beginning of the school year the LEAP staff ensures that the general education teachers are aware of the type of accommodations classified students need in their classes. Throughout the year the LEAP staff assists classified students and general education teachers by:
- Monitoring the students’ progress;
- Assisting the general education teachers with making accommodations so the students can access the curriculum, teaching activities and/or learning materials and tools; and
- Co-teaching to introduce a new skills or concept on an as needed basis;
In addition paraprofessionals are assigned to the general education classes to provide additional support services to the students and teacher(s).
TECHNOLOGY
To assist the students with skill development in Language Arts and Mathematics the LEAP teachers incorporate software programs that are designed specifically for students with disabilities as well as program offered by the district. The students have access to the following programs:
- Balanced Literacy – a supplemental reading program
- Co:Writer and Write:OutLoud (grades 3-6) – this software combines Text Reader, Word Prediction, Vocabulary Development Assistant, Writing and Graphical Organizer.
- Kidspiration for grades K-3 and Inspiration – Graphical Organizer
- United Streaming –digital video-based learning resources
- Harcourt Math – websites to reinforce math skills and concepts
Throughout the school year the LEAP staff, in collaboration with the CST, will make recommendations regarding additional resources which they have determined will further enhance student’s learning experiences.
