CLAIM, EVIDENCE, AND REASONING  (C-E-R)

Answering open-ended response questions is an important task in fourth grade.  We do this using the C-E-R strategy. We start off by stating a CLAIM to answer the question, provide EVIDENCE from the text, and use REASONING to explain how the EVIDENCE from the text supports your answer.

Use C-E-R to answer questions.

Put the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning together to form a paragraph.

Note: When giving more than one piece of evidence, the reasoning will be immediately following the evidence that it is explaining.

  C

CLAIM

A statement that respond to/answers the question using words from the question.

E

EVIDENCE

Provide EVIDENCE to support your claim.

The evidence should relate to the answer and include facts/text evidence that will convince someone that your claim is correct.

R

REASONING

Explain how your evidence supports your claim. You main need to include background knowledge along with the evidence in order for your reasoning to be clear.

Example Response:

Question: According to the article, is it important for lions to live as a pride?

Response:

It is important for lions to live as a pride because they depend on one another for survival. For example, the article states that "the lionesses shar the work of hunting and raising cubs" and mail lions "provide protection from other lions." They also work together when they hunt larger prey. This evidents shows that it is important for lions to live in a pride. They share the work of hunting, raising, cubs and protection. By sharing responsibilities as a pride, they will be able to survive a long time.
