MATH NOTEBOOKS

For all of my math classes, I require a student notebook.  A multi-subject notebook or several notebooks are generally best. I feel it is imperative for students to keep their work in an organized notebook.  This notebook is often the most valuable resource for my students because it will contain not only notes, but daily examples from math lessons.  Parents can use the notebook to assist in reviewing, studying, and helping with homework.   By reviewing students’ notebooks, I can get a clearer picture of my students’ mathematical development.

    • All work is to be done neatly and in pencil.
    • All work is to be dated.
    • The notebook should contain the following:
      • Math message (warm-up)
      • Notes and Examples
      • Classwork (this may be combined with notes and examples)
      • Homework help  **usually this means that the notebook should be brought home in order to help successfully complete  math homework so students can use their notes as a reference

  • I will assist students the first few weeks of school to help them properly set up and organize their notebook and to become familiar with my expectations.

  • At a designated time, notebooks may need to be replaced (be sure to purchase a backup notebook), but the Delsea Middle School math teachers strongly recommend keeping material from 6th grade math lessons for future reference. Some teachers will give extra credit to students who bring their notebook to 7th grade.

  • Notebooks are for students to refer to when they are doing classwork, homework, and studying for tests or quizzes, so they need to be taken home and brought to class every day.  There may be times when the notebook does not need to be brought home (such as weekends).  There may also be times when I allow students to use their notebooks during quizzes or tests.

  • Notebooks may be used as a grade on the above criteria. If it is to be used as a grade, I will give the students plenty of advance notice.
