The AP Examinations are administered each year in May and represent the culmination of college-level work in a given discipline in a secondary school setting. Rigorously developed by committees of college and AP high school faculty, the AP Exams test students' ability to perform at a college level.
This test consists of a one hour multiple-choice section with 55 questions that make up 45% of the total score, and a two hour free response section with 3 questions that make up 55% of the total score.
Total scores on the multiple-choice section are based only on the number of questions correct. There is no penalty for incorrect answers and no points for unanswered questions.
Overall, nearly 60 percent of all AP test takers receive AP scores of at least 3. This score is regarded as an indicator of an ability to do successful work at most colleges. (scores range from 1 to 5)

How many colleges accept AP grades? |
Most colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, as well as colleges and universities in 40 other countries, have a policy granting incoming students credit, placement, or both, for qualifying AP Exam grades. The best source of specific and up-to-date information about an individual institution's policy is its catalog or Web site. |
Are students expected to do summer reading? |
Most AP courses embrace summer reading as an integral part of the course. Many reasons exist for summer reading. Strong students read during the summer, keeping the brain active in academic pursuits. Many schools require summer reading for all students, not just those in an accelerated or honors program. |

Five Major Philosophies to Remember:
1. Think about complexity. What's the big picture or Universal Idea? How does ______ impact the text's meaning as a whole? Articulate the shift in your thesis!
2. Don't just assert something is true. Explain how or why it is true.
3. Always look for the best answer. Pay attention to trigger words.
4. Never assume the reader of an essay will "get it." Give evidence and always explain reasoning.
5. Read essay prompts carefully. Failure to address entire prompt is a major reason for downscored essays. Pay attention to "suggestions" and plural words.
