Classroom Management Plan

Classroom Organization:

When the students report to the gym with their homeroom teacher they are asked to walk to their squad lines.  The students sit in squads numbered 1-6 in alphabetical order by last name.  2 students are picked to lead the stretches while the teacher takes attendance.  During the stretches the teacher checks to make sure the students are prepared for class wearing sneakers, and having no bulky jewelry on.

The stretches for the Physical Education classes are the same for grades K-8.

  The stretches are as follows…

Standing Up

1. Feet together, down touch your toes. (Hamstring stretch)

2. Feet apart, down to the right, (Groin and Hamstring stretch)

3. Feet apart, down to the left. (Groin and Hamstring stretch)

4. Feet apart, down to the middle. (Groin and Hamstring stretch)

2 Minute Activity:

After we stretch we do a 2 minute activity.  The two minute activity for Physical Education is running most of the time.  Other activities are substituted when the gym can not be used or if space is limited.

Before we start the students are to find their resting heart rate by taking their pulse either on their wrist or neck.  When the 2 minute activity is running, the students are to run for 2 minutes around the gym in the direction of the day.    The direction of the day that the students run in is posted on the blue wall as well as the opposite wall.  There are 4 cones on the corners of the rectangle made by the white lines on the gym floor that the students run around.  No students should be in the middle of this area.  At the end of the 2 minutes the students are to walk for 30 seconds in the same direction to catch their breath.  Students are asked to find their pulse while they are walking.  We use music to make our time more enjoyable as wella s to signal our start and stop.

After the completion of the 2 minute activity, the instructor will have the students be seated for instruction time.

Instruction & Rules of Activity:

While the students are seated, the facilitator will give any and all instructions for the day’s activities.  Rules are stressed for correct student activity and safety precautions.  Instructional time is minimal in order to have the students on task as much as possible.  Due to the lack of time spent with students due to their schedules, the goal of the Physical Education program is to get the students involved and moving as quickly as possible for as long as possible.

Many of the classroom rules are restated during this time of the class.  The classroom rules are the same for grades K-8.  The rules are taught on the first day of class, and are reinforced on a daily basis.  The classroom rules are as follows.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  2. Freeze (stop moving and stop talking) when you hear…

The whistle blow

The Fire Alarm Sound

The Music Stop

The teacher say Freeze

  1. Raise your hand…

To ask a question

To answer a question

To use the lavatory

To get a drink

To go to the Nurse

(A student must use the words “May I Please” in order to use the lavatory.  The student will not permitted to use the lavatory or get a drink until they use the proper grammar)

4.  Be nice to each other.  If you do not have any nice to say to

     someone, do not say anything

at all.  Treat others the way you want to be treated.

  1. No food or drink in the gym at any time for safety reasons.
  2. Know the rules of the game and follow them.

Students that do not follow these simple rules are disciplined according to the following Physical Education Class Discipline Process.

Physical Education Class Discipline

Inappropriate behavior and/or Poor sportsmanship (towards another student)

1st Offense: Give the student verbal warning of the inappropriate behavior and ask them to cease and desist.

2nd Offense: Student receives a “Time Out” and will lose credit for their sportsmanship portion of their grade for the day (33% of daily grade) Home room teacher is notified.

3rd Offense: Administrative intervention:  Student is either sent to Time Out or to the office for a cool down period and homeroom teacher is notified.

4th Offense: Student is written up and phone call home is made.  Home room teacher is also notified.

Repeat offenders are referred to Peer Mediation & Administrators.

Physical Education Class Discipline (Continued)

Aggressive behavior (toward teacher or another student)

1st Offense: Student written up and sent to the office or

                “timeout”

2nd Offense: Student written up and sent to the office or

“timeout”.  Call to home is made.

3rd Offense: Student written up and sent to the office or

“timeout”.  Call to home is made.  Situation referred to

administration for possible placement change for class.

For patterns of behavior that are dangerous to the students success in school or to the students general well being, the teacher will contact the PAC committee.

Emergency Procedures:

       Student Injury

If the student is able to go to the nurse under their own power the instructor will issue a pass and have the injured student accompanied by another student go to the nurse’s office.

If the student is unable to get to the nurse under their own power the instructor will either call the main office to page the nurse over the intercom or send a student to get the nurse(depending on severity of injury).  In extreme cases the instructor will call 911 before sending for the nurse.

Fire Alarm:

If the fire alarm sounds while the students are in the gym the students will freeze and listen for the teacher’s instructions.  The students will make sure the hallway door is closed and take the students out the emergency exit as indicated on the Fire Evacuation Route Map enclosed in the Physical Education Class Fire Drill Procedure Folder.  This folder is hanging in the gym next to the emergency exit.  If that exit is blocked by fire, the students will use an alternate exit.  Any student that is not in the classroom at the time of the fire evacuation is to find the nearest class exiting the building and join them.

If the classroom is to be locked down or the classroom is to be evacuated the teacher must know the school emergency codes that will be announced.
