Get ready for Second Grade ...
- Read, read, read!
- Practice writing all the letters in your BEST handwriting.
- Memorize & identify the Dolch sight words for first grade (click here& click here). Preview and practice the 2nd grade dolce sight words (click here).
- Get flashcards to practice your addition and subtraction facts. You REALLY need to know them quickly in 2nd grade.
- Keep a summer journal. Be sure to use capital letters and proper punctuation.
- Recognize the "H brother" digraphs - ch, sh, th, wh - and their sounds.
- Idenitfy short and long vowel patterns in words. Spell words with short vowel and long vowel patterns (ex: CVCe).
- Count money using coins you find at home. Start counting with quarters, nickles, dimes, then pennies.
- Practice telling time to the hour, half-hour using an analog and digital clock.
- Skip count by 2's, 5's, 10'sto 200. Can you count by 25's for quarters... 25, 50, 75, 100!
- Can you write your address and phone number?
- How many states can you name? How many countries can you name? Look at a map to help.
- Who is the mayor of Elk Township? Who is the governor of NJ? Who is the president of the United States?
- List important community helpers in the community and what service they provide.
- What do all living things need to survive?
