Welcome to the Student Resources page!

 

   This page is designed to provide students and families with helpful tools that can be used at school and at home to support what we are learning in class. You will find resources for both Mathematics and Music, along with study strategies, helpful reminders, digital tools, and suggestions for what to do when you need extra help. Please remember that online resources are meant to support your learning—not replace your own thinking. Always follow directions given in class and use school-approved websites and technology appropriately.

Math Is About Thinking!

 

   Math is much more than memorizing formulas or getting the correct answer.

Strong mathematicians learn to:

  • Understand why a strategy works.

  • Explain their thinking.

  • Make connections between different concepts.

  • Check whether an answer makes sense.

  • Learn from mistakes.

  • Try more than one strategy.

  • Ask questions when something is unclear.

  • Keep working when a problem becomes challenging.

 

   If you do not understand something immediately, that does not mean you are bad at Math. It simply means you are still learning it.

Remember: “I don't understand it yet” is much more powerful than “I can't do it.”

⭐ Khan Academy

   Khan Academy is one of my recommended resources when you need additional explanations or practice.

 

You can use it to:

  • Watch instructional videos.

  • Review concepts from class.

  • Complete practice problems.

  • Strengthen foundational skills.

  • Learn at your own pace.

 

Best Used For:

 

   Reviewing a concept that you don't fully understand. If something we learned in class still feels confusing, try searching Khan Academy for the topic and watching an explanation before practicing.


🧮 Desmos

Desmos provides several excellent digital mathematics tools, including:

  • Graphing calculator

  • Scientific calculator

  • Geometry tools

  • Visual representations of mathematical relationships

 

Best Used For:

 

   Exploring mathematics and visualizing concepts. Students should remember that calculators are tools, not replacements for mathematical understanding. If an assignment requires you to show your work, using a calculator does not replace showing your reasoning.


🎲 Mathigon

   Mathigon provides interactive mathematics lessons, puzzles, activities, and virtual manipulatives. It is an excellent resource for students who enjoy learning by exploring and interacting with mathematics.

 

Best Used For:

  • Problem solving

  • Visual learning

  • Mathematical exploration


🎮 Math Playground

   Math Playground contains educational mathematics games, puzzles, logic activities, and problem-solving challenges for elementary and middle-grade learners.

Best Used For:

 

   Extra practice in a fun format.

 

Remember: Educational games should still involve learning and thinking. Choose activities that help strengthen the skills you are currently working on.

   The Math Learning Center provides several excellent virtual mathematics tools. One particularly helpful resource is its interactive Fractions tool: https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/apps/fractions

 

Students can visually represent, compare, and explore fractions using fraction circles and bars.

 

Best Used For:

  • Fractions

  • Place value

  • Multiplication models

  • Division models

  • Visual mathematics

  • Virtual manipulatives

 

   These tools are especially helpful when you need to see what a mathematics problem represents.


🔢 Math Skills Worth Practicing

 

   Students in upper elementary mathematics should continue strengthening foundational skills throughout the year.

 

Important skills include:

  • Multiplication & Division Facts
  • Strong fact fluency makes many more advanced mathematics problems easier.
  • Practice multiplication and related division facts regularly.

Place Value

 

   Remember that the value of a digit depends on where it is located within a number.

 

   Place value is important when working with:

  • Whole numbers

  • Decimals

  • Rounding

  • Addition

  • Subtraction

  • Multiplication

  • Division


Fractions

 

   When working with fractions, always ask:

  • What does the denominator tell me?

  • What does the numerator tell me?

  • Are the pieces equal?

  • Can I represent this with a picture or model?

  • Is my answer reasonable?


Decimals

 

   Pay careful attention to place valueAlways line up decimal points correctly when appropriate and estimate first so you know approximately what your answer should be.


Word Problems

 

   Before calculating anything:

1. Read the entire problem.

2. Determine what you know.

3. Determine what the problem is asking.

4. Identify important information.

5. Choose an appropriate strategy.

6. Solve.

7. Check your answer.

8. Ask: Does my answer make sense?

   When solving a problem, ask yourself:

☐ Did I read the entire problem?

☐ Do I understand what I am being asked to find?

☐ Did I identify the important information?

☐ Did I choose an appropriate operation or strategy?

☐ Did I show my work?

☐ Did I label my answer when needed?

☐ Did I check my calculations?

☐ Does my answer make sense?

☐ Can I explain why my answer is correct?

 

   If you can answer yes to all of these questions, you are demonstrating strong mathematical thinking!

   Music Is More Than Singing!

 

   Music involves:

  • Performing

  • Listening

  • Creating

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Movement

  • Rhythm

  • Expression

  • Culture

   You do not have to already play an instrument or consider yourself a singer to be successful in Music. You simply need to be willing to participate, listen, learn, practice, and try.

🎼 Musical Concepts to Remember

 

Beat

 

   The beat is the steady pulse of the music. Think of it as the musical heartbeat.


Rhythm

 

   Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds and silences that occurs over the beat.

 

Remember: Beat stays steady. Rhythm changes.


Melody

 

   A melody is a sequence of pitches that forms a musical idea.

It is often the part of a song that you remember or sing.


Tempo

 

   Tempo tells us how fast or slow the music moves.

 

Examples include:

  • Slow

  • Moderate

  • Fast

 

   Changing the tempo can completely change how music feels.


Dynamics

 

   Dynamics describe how loudly or softly music is performed. Common markings include:

  • p — piano — soft
  • f — forte — loud

 

   Music can also gradually become louder or softer.


Pitch

 

   Pitch describes how high or low a sound is.


Harmony

 

   Harmony occurs when different pitches sound together.


Musical Form

   

   Form describes how music is organized. You may hear sections repeat, contrast, or return throughout a piece.


👂 Become an Active Listener

 

   Listening to music is also a skill! When listening to a piece of music, ask yourself:

   What do I hear?

 

   Can you identify:

  • Instruments?

  • Voices?

  • Beat?

  • Rhythm?

  • Melody?

  • Tempo?

  • Dynamics?

 

   What changes?

 

   Does the music:

  • Get faster?

  • Get slower?

  • Get louder?

  • Get softer?

  • Change instruments?

  • Repeat?

 

   How does it make me feel?

   

   Try to explain what you hear in the music that creates that feelingInstead of simply saying: “It sounds happy.”

 

Think: “It sounds cheerful because the tempo is fast and the melody is energetic.”

That is musical thinking!


🎧 Practice Music Responsibly

 

   When using headphones:

  • Keep the volume at a safe level.

  • Stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Follow teacher or parent directions.

  • Use only approved websites or applications.

  • Never allow listening activities to distract you from another assignment.

 

   Protect your hearing. You only get one set of ears!


🧠 How to Study Effectively

 

   Studying does not mean staring at your notes for an hour. Effective studying means doing something with the information.

 

Try these strategies:

 

Retrieve

Close your notes and see what you can remember.

 

Explain

Teach the concept to someone else. If you can explain it clearly, you probably understand it.

 

Practice

Complete a few problems or exercises without looking at an example.

 

Correct

When you make a mistake, determine why you made it.

 

Review

Spend a little time reviewing throughout the week instead of trying to learn everything the night before an assessment.

 

Ask

If something still does not make sense, ask for help.


⏱️ The 15-Minute Study Challenge

 

   You do not always need a long study session.

 

Try this:

 

5 Minutes

Review notes or vocabulary.

 

5 Minutes

Practice a few problems, rhythms, notes, or concepts.

 

5 Minutes

Check your answers and correct mistakes.

 

15 focused minutes can accomplish a lot! Consistency matters more than cramming.


🆘 What Should I Do If I'm Confused?

 

   Getting confused is part of learning. When you do not understand something, try the following:

 

Step 1: Reread the directions.

Step 2: Look at an example from class.

Step 3: Review your notes.

Step 4: Try the problem again.

Step 5: Use an appropriate resource from this page.

Step 6: Write down exactly what is confusing you.

Step 7: Ask Mr. G for help.

 

   Instead of saying: “I don't get it.”

 

   Try saying: “I understand this part, but I get confused when I have to ______.” That makes it much easier for us to figure out how I can help you.


🤖 A Note About Artificial Intelligence

 

   Artificial intelligence and other digital tools can sometimes help explain concepts, but they should never replace your own thinking or your teacher's instructions.

Students should never use AI or another website simply to generate answers and submit them as their own work. If technology is permitted for an assignment, use it to help you:

  • Understand a concept.

  • Ask for another explanation.

  • Practice.

  • Check your thinking.

  • Generate additional practice questions.

 

   Do not use it to avoid doing the learning yourself. If you are unsure whether a particular tool is allowed for an assignment, ask Mr. G first.


🔐 Stay Safe Online

 

Whenever you use an online learning resource:

  • Never share your password.

  • Never share personal information.

  • Follow school technology policies.

  • Use your school account only for appropriate school-related purposes.

  • Never communicate with strangers through websites or applications.

  • Tell a trusted adult if something online makes you uncomfortable.

  • Ask permission before creating an account on a new website.

  • Stay on the websites and activities you have been instructed to use.

 

Being a responsible digital citizen is part of being a responsible student.


👨‍👩‍👧 Resources for Families

 

   Parents and guardians can use this page too! If your child is struggling with a concept, consider asking:

 

“Can you show me what you already know?”

“What part is confusing?”

“Can you show me an example from class?”

“What strategy did you try?”

“How could we check your answer?”

 

   These questions encourage students to think rather than simply being given an answer. Families are also encouraged to use the resources on this page for additional practice and review at home. Please remember that the methods being taught in class may sometimes look different from the way an adult originally learned a concept. If you are unsure about a strategy or method, please feel free to contact me rather than allowing it to become a source of frustration.

1. Ask questions.

Questions help us learn.

 

2. Make mistakes.

Mistakes give us information about what we need to practice.

 

3. Show effort.

You cannot always control whether something is difficult, but you can control whether you try.

 

4. Practice consistently.

Small amounts of regular practice build strong skills.

 

5. Never give up on yourself.

You may not understand something yet.

 

Keep learning.

Keep asking.

Keep practicing.

Keep growing.
