Course Description:
Health Science 1 is the first of four courses offered to students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. During this first course, students are introduced to healthcare history, careers, law and ethics, cultural diversity, health care language and math, infection control, professionalism, communication, basics of the organization of healthcare facilities, and types of healthcare insurance. Students get a good grasp of where healthcare has been, where it is going and how professionalism and personal characteristics impact their success. Students will be introduced to “Standard Precautions” and learn about confidentiality through HIPAA. As students are guided through health care career exploration, they will discuss education levels, and requirements needed to be successful. Student will participate in a career project, and will hear from guest speakers in the healthcare field. Students will learn first-aid procedures and learn fire safety. The skills and knowledge that students learn in Health Science 1 serve to prepare them for future clinical experiences such as job shadowing or internships as they advance in the Health Science courses. |

Attendance Policy
Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. Laurens District 55 High School expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for ensuring their work does not suffer because of absences. All students are expected to attend every scheduled class on time. Exceptions may be made for illness and valid emergencies.

- Be responsible for your actions
- No eating, drinking, cell phones, or iPods permitted in the classroom
- Chromebook will be used daily. They should be charged before coming to class.
- Every 2 weeks the students need to join the Zoom Meeting to inform the teacher about their strengths and weakness regarding the topic they have learnt.
Class Requirements
The student will need to review DAILY! Homework will be given approximately 1-2 days a week. It will be collected at the beginning of class the day it is due. It is YOUR responsibility to complete homework assignments.
If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to make up the assignments and/or tests when you return. I will send a weekly email out to the whole class informing them of the homework assignments and/or upcoming tests or quizzes.
It is YOUR responsibility to come after school or during scheduled lunch tutor sessions to catch up on missed work from your absences. I will NOT re-teach the lesson during class time.
Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity
Plagiarism is the practice of copying words, sentences, images, or ideas for use in written or oral assessments without giving proper credit to the source. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of illegal help on anything that has been determined by the teacher to be an individual effort. Both are considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your course grade. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.
Methodology
Students will be given challenging real-world projects & assignments typical of the healthcare field. High quality work is expected! Classroom activities will include reading, writing, research, problem solving, and projects. Major projects will be presented to the class. Students will often work in teams, but will be expected to complete individual assignments in relation to the team’s work. Assessment methods will include written exams, tests, demonstrations, research reports, reading assignments and projects.
