Physical Science Syllabus
Ville Platte High School
Instructor: Mrs. Anamika Sharma
Room: 1002
Email: [email protected]
Prerequisites:
- Basic Math (required) - ability to use and solve problems and equations.
- Biology, Physical Science, Life Science
Course Description:
This course will introduce traditional concepts of scientific method and lab safety rules. Physical Science is the study of atoms, how they arrange themselves into compounds, and the changes they undergo. The course will include a review of measurement and the metric system, study of atomic structure, introducing cell and its structure, evolution, introduction to Genetics, and also chemical bonding. Problem-solving skills, test-taking skills, hands on activities, time-on-task, problem-based learning, critical thinking situations, and activity and lab based learning will be incorporated throughout the course.
Grading:
50% Daily grades, 25% test grades, and 25% district test
Supplies:
- Pencils, color pencils, glue sticks, color pens, highlighters, black pens
- 2 Composition Notebooks
Class Policies:
- Late Homework- No makeup work, if turned in late no grade will be given.
- Makeup Work- If you are absent it is your responsibility to obtain missing work.
- Missed tests must be taken before or after school. A zero will be given until work is made up.
- Cheating on a test or assignment will result in a grade of zero.
Classroom Expectations:
- Students are expected to be in their seat and ready when the bell rings.
- Materials must be brought to class each day.
- The room must be clean at the end of the period before leaving.
- Treat everyone with respect.
- All school rules will be followed as stated in the student handbook.
- All safety rules as stated in the Flinn’s Science Safety Agreement must be followed.
- Complete the assigned work on Google Classroom, whenever given.
- Every 2 weeks the students need to join the Zoom Meeting to inform the teacher about their strengths and weakness regarding the topic they have learnt. (applicable when online)
Keys for Success in Physical Science
- Have a positive attitude!
- I am here to help you succeed, so fell free to ask me for help. I am available before and after school in my room.
- Keep clear and complete notes that you understand. Do not simply copy notes blindly without thought of comprehension.
- Ask lots of questions. If you are unclear about something from the textbook lab, or form discussion, ask.
- Show clear, complete work for all problems in notes and on homework, quizzes, and tests. Circle or box your answer so that it may be easier found.
- Make sure that you understand how the lecture, homework, and labs interrelate.
- Start studying for test early. By studying and reviewing each night you are not only helping to prepare for the test more effectively, you are also more prepared for class each day and any quizzes that may be given.
Course Outline
This outline is designed to be a guide to the Physical Science course and is not to be viewed as the absolute syllabus. It should be viewed as provisional and is subject to alteration form time to time.
There are 6 major topics we will be covering this semester. These will be broken down into smaller units with very clear goals and objective of the material I need you to learn.
Unit 1: Mathematical and Computational Analysis
Unit 2: Cell & Its Structure
Unit 3: Classification of Organisms
Unit 4: Evolution
Unit 5: Introduction to Genetics
Unit 6: Atoms & Bonding
****This syllabus is subject to change****
Mrs. Sharma’s Classroom Procedures:
1.Transitioning from whole group to small group instruction:
Mrs. Sharma will assign the small groups. Students are to silently take their materials to the assigned area and work with the assigned group. You are expected to work with everyone you are assigned respectfully and purposefully.
2.Administration of Assessments: (Celebrations of your knowledge):
“Celebrations”, quizzes and tests, are scheduled periodically. They are not the same as your neighbors, so please keep your eyes on your own paper.
3.Restroom request:
To lessen interruption of the lesson, students are asked to raise their THUMB to request to use the restroom. When the teacher responds that you can use the restroom, please completely fill out a pass and wait near the back for Mrs. Sharma to initial it.
4.Getting the whole class’s attention:
Mrs. Sharma will raise her hand or ask for everyone’s attention. Please raise your hand so that others will understand that teacher needs everyone’s attention.
5.When students ask or answer questions:
Please raise your hand to ask or answer a question. Do not “shout out” the answer. When another student is asking or answering a question, please show respect by remaining silent.
6.When a visitor enters classroom:
Students are to remain on task when a visitor (Administration, other students, teachers) enters the classroom. Do not shout out to that person or interrupt instruction in progress. All visitors will be treated with respect.
7.Sharpening pencils:
Do not interrupt instruction to sharpen your pencil. Raise your thumb (as you do to use the restroom) and when you are acknowledged, simply go to the rear of the room and sharpen your pencil.
8.Coming into the classroom:
Please come into the classroom quietly, sit down at your assigned seat and immediately start your work. Do not run around the classroom or socialize during work time. You are also not to linger in the hall before the bell.
