Educational Philosophy
In my mathematics classroom, my methods will replicate those of a scientific or STEAM-based classroom. Throughout life people constantly have to deal with random events or problems that may occur. By understanding the scenario and being able to think using qualitative memories from over the years, one should be able to devise a proper solution. Similarly, that is the goal to every problem in mathematics. As an educator in the classroom, I see myself very old fashioned. Other than using technology to present information and show videos to peak curiosity, most of the work we do in class will be hands on and collaborative. Students accelerate most when working with peers. When they learn from each other and collaboration occurs, students may learn in new perspectives and new methods they may not have been exposed to prior.
For the most part, technology will serve as a tool to set the scene for my lessons. Using the internet we can put our minds in a different state of mind other than the classroom. Most of the time the math we will be doing will be integrated into a real life problem, whether combining it with literature, biology, physics or chemistry is up to the lesson, but the history of mathematics is rich with mysteries and is used in every field. Therefore, not every student may have background information about a topic we may be discussing. The internet will be used to trigger this brain stigma to make a connection to give the learner a memory to latch back to and remember the lesson. By using technology to help students learn how to do research will be another huge role for technology in the classroom.
Finally, when setting up the atmosphere of my classroom, I want to mimic the most tranquil place I can think of, space. In my classroom, we will respect everyone’s view and every voice matters. There is no wrong answer and we welcome everybody. The learning community I set up does not tolerate disrespect and insubordination. The classroom environment is a place to share ideas and collaborate, not compete. Most students in school today are fixated that life is a competition, it’s not. In my classroom focused on science, we will treat it like it is a laboratory and in a lab there are safety rules to ensure that every student is safe and feels comfortable to learn. Every child has the right to a free and safe education and I plan to do that in the most stress free way possible. Experiencing life may be hard, but learning should always be fun!
