Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to Hillside! If you are receiving this letter, your child is either in my homeroom or in my Language Arts class - maybe both. I am excited to meet your child and look forward to starting the new school year. I have sent your child a welcome letter as well. It explains how to find our classroom on day one, and what some of my expectations will be for the year.
Fifth grade is an exciting year for students. Academically they face new challenges. Socially they develop strong friendships and learn to collaborate with fellow students. And emotionally, they become more responsible for their progress and build greater self-confidence. Good communication between home and school is very important for your child’s success. You can contact me any time by sending a written note to school, by calling (908) 231-1905 ext 124, or via email at [email protected]. Email is the best method of communication. Visit my web page for further information and homework updates. Enter hi.brrsd.org to go to the Hillside Intermediate School website, click on Menu at the top. Go to Student resources, then click Teacher Websites. Teacher web pages are listed alphabetically.
Two important dates to remember: The first day of school is September 2. Students should come to their Homeroom to begin their day. Back to School Night is on September 29 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm.
Google Classroom is used for all assignments in class. You and your student can find all due assignments and scores by logging in as the student and selecting “To do” or “To review” from the top.
The lockers at school are very narrow. Rolling backpacks do not fit in the lockers and are not recommended. Below is a list of supplies needed for 5th grade:
- pencils and pencil case
- post it notes (that fit in the pencil case)
- ear buds (not wireless, that fit in the pencil case)
- a labeled, reusable water bottle
Please get these supplies before school starts. Coming prepared will help them be successful.
Students do not have snack time. Please encourage your child to eat a hearty breakfast.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I am looking forward to a great school year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Gum
