Reading Log Overview
In fifth grade your child will have the option to read independently for homework each night and keep a reading log to document his/her progress. As an important component of our balanced literacy program, independent reading is time well spent as it allows children to practice using the reading strategies and skills we learn in class.
Reading Logs:
- Students should read a minimum of 20 minutes per night, Monday through Thursday, and once per weekend. Of course, students are welcome to exceed the minimum requirement. Our goal is a total of 100 minutes for the week.
- Fiction and nonfiction texts are acceptable. Magazines or comic books may be recorded only once per week. It is encouraged that students strive to demonstrate continuity in their logs, documenting that they are most often finishing the books they select. In class we have discussed how to make good book choices and when it is appropriate to abandon a book.
- Reading logs should be filled out completely each day. This will include the date, the title of the book, the number of minutes spent reading, and a short writing task that is specified on the log. Students should add their minutes for the week, sign the log, and have a parent or guardian sign it.
- Reading logs will be distributed and collected on Mondays. I will not be checking each child’s reading log on a daily basis. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with her/his reading and log.
