Step System
I believe in having a proactive approach and not a reactive approach to behavioral issues. Everyone has a bad day and oftentimes people need time to cool down and think things through. Because of this belief, I utilize a "Step System" in my classroom.
Step 1 – Frustrated? Let's Cool Down
- You may cool down in class if you are frustrated
- Ask permission from staff to put your head down, draw or sit in another location.
- If staff notices you are frustrated, you may be offered the opportunity to cool down in the class.
Step 2 – Alternate location and Conference Outside of Room
- If you are cursing, disrupting class or showing “out of control” behaviors you will be sent out of class to reset and cool down.
- If sent out, you must conference with staff before reentering. We want to try and get to the bottom of why you feel that way and try to stop it from happening again.
- Email/text sent to adult at home.
Step 3 - Consequences
- Phone conference with the adult at home.
- If a staff member contacts home and the behavior stays the same, an office referral will be completed.
****If a student refuses to participate in a Step, then the next Step is offered. If a second refusal is made, the student is sent to the office with a referral documenting the refusals.****
