In order to successfully use the 12 powerful words Rosenwald is also emplimenting the UNRAV(A)VEL strategy for reading. However, Larry Bell has a Kindergarten level of the UNRA(A)VEL strategy that we in PreK are planning to use this year, it is called the REMEMBER Strategy. This strategy can be used at home as well as during a bed time story or if you are reading to your child during the day. Below is what the REMEMBER strategy means and some tips for using it at home.
R-Restate the title
(Pretty self explainatory resay the title and ask what do you think this story will be about?)
E-Everyone predict/think what the story will be about
(what does the cover tell you?)
M-Mark the sentences
(follow along with your finger to show how you read from left to right)
E-Emphasize the important words
(use voices as you read and tone)
M-Make sure you look at the pictures
(Doing a Story Walk: going through the pages without reading the words and guess what the pictures mean)
B- Be aware of the reading objective
(make sure to mention the reason why you are reading the book)
E-Evaluate the story
(Be a listening detective: How do you feel about the ending? What would you change?)
R-Retell the story to a friend/parent/partner
(Share the story by retelling it without the book or explain it to another family member or friend)
