The Parts of a Book

 

Cover – usually has the book’s title and author on it.

 

Spine – usually also has the book’s title and author. In our library, the spine is where you should see the label which has the number and/or letters that help you locate the book on the shelves. These are known as Call numbers, and appear when you look up the book in Destiny.

 

Title page – this page has some of the same information that is on the cover, like the title of the book, the author, and the illustrator if there is one.

 

The copyright page – usually on the back of the title page, this will have copyright and publisher information.

 

Table of Contents -- Lists the chapters in a book and the pages on which the chapters start.

 

The Preface – An introduction; a “foreword” is usually written by someone other than the author.

 

The Contents of the book is known as the body.

 

Appendix – sometimes the author includes additional material that is referred to in the main part of the book. This is mostly in reference books.

 

Bibliography or References– books and other works that the author used in writing. It may include books that the author is recommending on the subject.

 

Index – an alphabetical list of the topics in a book, and the page numbers where the reader can find them.

 

Glossary – has definitions of more unusual words.
