          Understanding How to Form and Use Regular Verbs in Spanish!

 

  SPANISH VERBS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS: -AR, -ER, AND -IR.

 

             EACH GROUP HAS REGULAR VERBS.

             EACH GROUP HAS IRREGULAR VERBS.

           *EACH GROUP HAS A SET OF ENDINGS.

          **EACH GROUP USES SUBJECT PRONOUNS.

 

      ***  VERB ENDINGS AND SUBJECT PRONOUNS WORK

            TOGETHER TO DETERMINE “WHO” IS DOING

            THE ACTION THAT EACH VERB REPRESENTS!

          

                            *AR VERB ENDINGS                                    

       1) -o (goes with Yo)         1) -amos (goes with Nosotros(as)

       2) -as (goes with Tú)        2) -áis (goes with Vosotros (as)  

       3) -a (goes with                3) goes with Ellos, Ellas, Uds.

            Él, Ella, Ud.)         

 

 

                       ** SUBJECT PRONOUNS

         1) Yo = I                     1) Nosotros (as)= We

         2) Tú=You (fam.)       2) Vosotros (as)=You (fam/pl)

         3) Él=He/Ella=She     3) Ellos=They (m.)/Ellas=They (f.)

                                         Sample Conjugation of a Regular -AR Verb  

                                        hablar=to speak; to talk 

         [Remove the -ar ending, which leaves the "stem"of the verb;"stem"="action!]                  (SINGULAR)                                                 (PLURAL)           

                 1) Yo hablo                         1)Nosotros (as) hablamos

                 2) Tú hablas                       2) Vosotros (as) habláis

                 3) Él, Ella, Ud. habla          3) Ellos, Ellas, Uds. hablan

 

     

      The conjugation above can be translated 5 different ways! See below: 

 

  1) I speak, I do speak, I am speaking    1) We speak, We do speak, We are speaking

       Do I speak? Am I speaking?                 Do we speak? Are we speaking?

  2) You (fam.) speak, You do speak,       2) You (fam./pl.) speak, You do speak,

       You are speaking, Do you speak?        You are speaking, Do you speak?

        Are you speaking?                                  Are you speaking? (OBSOLETE)

  3) He, She, You (for.) speak, do speak,  3) They (m/f) speak, do speak, are speaking.

        is/are speaking, Does he/she speak?      Do they speak? Are they speaking?

       Is/Are he, she, you speaking?               You (pl.) speak, do speak, are speaking

  If we include the definition "talk," this conjugation could tranlate 10 different ways!

iEach position translates in 5 different ways, just as indicated in the -ar section!

-IR VERBS WORK JUST LIKE THE -AR'S AND -ER'S!

 

*THEY HAVE JUST SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT ENDINGS THAN THE -ER VERBS!

REMEMBER:

Take off the -ir ending and the "stem" of the verb will be left!

The "stem" of the verb defines the action being expressed.

To that "stem" add the following "endings" which indicate WHO is doing the action!

 

-ir verb endings in the Present tense
