Book Chat Newsletters

Week of January 13:  Franklin's Bad Day- Franklin is feeling mad and sad because his friend Otter moved away but in the end, his father explains that they can still be friends.  He suggests that they keep in touch by writing and calling each other.  We practiced our chatting manner by pretending to talk on the telephone, using cup phones with string tied between them.

Week of January 6:  Happy New Year!  It's a great time to review our chatting manners and friendly greetings so this week, we read Who Goes There?  This is a great winter story about a mouse who hears noises outside of his nest.  He tries to scare the creature away, only to find out in the end that it's another mouse trying to stay warm in her nest for winter too.  After getting off to a rocky start, the two characters become friends :)

Week of December 16:  The Very Snowy Christmas- We used stickers to make a picture scene on the cover of a greeting card.  After making the cards, we chatted about our creations, describing our pictures and telling how they looked the same or different from our friends.

Week of December 9:  We read One Dog Sleigh, a fun story about a little girl who goes on a sleigh ride with her dog but soon many forest animals jump in and before we know it the sleigh is stuck at the top of a hill!  After reading, we played a chatting game in partners.  We had to draw picture cards to imagine...if we were going on a sleigh ride, where would we go and who would go with us?  The children made some true matches such as to the mountain with a moose.  While others made silly matches including taking a pig to the beach.  Can you imagine?

Week of December 2:  We read Where is Christmas, Jesse Bear? and used position words (in, on, under, over, in front of, behind, between) to tell where objects are around our classroom

Week of November 25:  This is the Turkey- The children helped me read a repetative text story called This is the Turkey.  After reading, we made thankful, happy fall cards to share with someone at home.  The children wrote their message and decorated the cover of their cards.  Of course, we concluded by chatting about the pictures they made.

Week of November 18:   Dinner Feast Newsletter

Week of November 11:  The Gingerbread Bear- We read a different version of The Gingerbread Man story and practiced taking turns to give and follow directions to make Gingerbread cookies using craft materials

Week of November 4:  Sophie's Squash- We read a sweet story about a little girl who does not want to cook her Butternut Squash but turns it into her toy doll and names her Bernice.  After reading, we played a chatting game called Fall Ball in which we shared some of our favorite things to do in Fall.  The kids like jumping in leaves, eating apples, carving and painting pumpkins, and playing outside.
