Before, During, and After Reading Ideas

 

Before Reading

 

  • Look at the title and illustrations together.  Predict what the story will be about
  • Talk about what you already know about the topic of the story.
  • Read the first page and then ask your child to predict what might happen next.

 

During Reading

 

  • Encourage your child to picture in his or her mind what is happening in the story.
  • Ask what might happen next in the story.
  • Encourage your child to change his or her predicitons as they learn new information.
  • Ask how a character might feel.
  • Identify the setting of the story.  Talk about where and when the story is happening.
  • Talk about the illustrations and how they work with the words to tell the story.

 

After Reading

 

  • Let your child illustrate his or her favorite part of the story.
  • Talk about the story together.
