Who should take AP Statistics?

Do you love numbers?  Do you like to ask why?  Can you imagine yourself as a math detective? If you answered any of these questions with a “Yes!” then AP Statistics is the course for you. Statistics is unlike any other math class you’ve ever taken.  You won’t be doing a lot of calculations.  It’s more about considering the facts, collecting the necessary data, deciding the appropriate test to run, and then analyzing the results in order to draw conclusions.  You really can be a math detective!

If you’re planning on a college major in business, engineering, the medical field, math, science, or social sciences, AP Statistics can give you a great foundation for courses in your major.

When should you take AP Statistics?

The best time to take AP Statistics is after you have completed Algebra II. You could take it

  • at the same time you’re taking Advanced Math, Dual Enrollment College Algebra, or Calculus.
  • as your chosen math senior year.

What kinds of questions can you answer? Consider the following:

  • The manager of a local fast-food restaurant is concerned about customers who ask for a water cup when placing an order but fill the cup with a soft drink from the beverage fountain instead of filling the cup with water. How often is this happening?  What is the cost to the business?  Does the manager need to make changes to prevent this from happening?

  • You’re the dairy manager at Oak Point and you’re getting ready to place a new order for Blue Bell’s newest flavor. Can knowing the age/gender breakdown of your shoppers influence your order?  Should it?

  • You want to surprise your Mom with a bag of red M & M’s for her birthday because red is her favorite color.  Unfortunately, you waited too late to order a bag of all one color.  You did a google search and discovered that there are supposed to be 20% reds in every bag of M & M’s.  How many bags do you need to buy to make sure you have enough?

  • You’ve interviewed for your dream job but you’re concerned that there might be gender bias in hiring because their last five hires have all been female.  As a male, do you have anything to worry about, or is just a coincidence?
