Common Course Syllabus

 

I.      Course Name: Financial Planning

        Grade Level:    11-12

        Credits:             2.5

        Prerequisites:   None

 

II.    DESCRIPTION:

        Understanding financial management concepts are useful life skills key to your future financial success.  This course investigates areas of interest that will enhance your financial security thus making you a smarter consumer.  The course content is designed to help the learner make wise spending, saving, \and credit decisions to achieve personal financial success. 

 

III.   ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:  

  1. What is credit and why is it important to establish good credit?

  2. What are the costs and benefits of credit?

  3. How can understanding effective personal finance strategies improve my life?

  4. How will developing effective spending habits affect my financial future?

  5. What is a savings plan and why is it important to ensure financial success?

  6. What steps can I take to protect myself from identity theft and financial scams? 

 

IV.   CORE ACTIVITIES:

  1. Describe how credit was developed in America, define basic credit vocabulary and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of credit.

  2. Discuss the importance and purpose of credit records, describe the 5Cs of credit and explain how to get started using credit

  3. Outline bankruptcy laws

  4. Describe the purpose of a checking account, prepare banking forms, distinguish among the various types of checking accounts

  5. Create and balance a personal budget

  6. Describe the stages of investing including the relationship between risk and return.  Discuss investment strategies, options, and sources of financial information

  7. Describe the responsibilities of consumer credit, discuss how to protect your credit from fraud and explain how to reduce or avoid credit costs

VI.   GRADING PLAN:

  1. Tests and Projects = 65%

  2. In-class assignments = 25%

  3. Class Participation = 10%
