Summer Literacy Activities
Reading:
- Have your child read a recipe and cook or bake something with you.
- Plan a weekly trip to your local library and check out some books.
- Set a goal to read 15-20 minutes each day and make a sticker chart with a prize at the end.
- Read a story with your child and ask them questions throughout. Ask them to retell the story including characters, setting, problem, and solution. Encourage your child to make personal connections to the story.

Sight Words:
- Follow this link and print out flashcards.

- Take any game like, Candy Land or Sorry, and incorporate sight words into the game.
- Use a pop-it or fidget while practicing sight words. Have the child read a few words, then roll a die, and pop that many bubbles.
- Draw hopscotch on the driveway and write sight words inside each box.
Spelling:
- Set your child up with an online dictionary (app or website) to look up spelling words.

- Write sight words or spelling words in the sand (at the beach or in a tray), salt (in a tray), on carpet, with shaving cream on the table, or with a stick in the dirt.
- Write sight words or spelling words on the driveway with sidewalk chalk or with a paint brush and cup of water.
- Use magnetic letters on a cookie tray to practice spelling words.
- Play Scrabble or Scrabble Junior.
Writing:
- Keep a Summer Journal and write a sentence or two about your day. Draw and color pictures to accompany your writing.
- Write postcards or letters to family members and friends. See how many letters you can exchange over the summer!
- If your child receives a gift for a birthday or other special event, have your child write a thank you letter to the person.
- Create a puppet show or a play. Write down your script and act it out for family or friends.
- Keep a Book Journal writing about the stories you read. Write about the characters, setting, problem, solution, a summary of what you read, a favorite part, a prediction you have, or connections to your life. Draw and color pictures to add to your journal.
- Write a short story and illustrate it. Share it with family and friends!
- Write down a song and sing it for your family and friends!
- Secret Message – write a word or two or a whole message on white paper with a white crayon. Go over your message with colorful markers, watercolors, or dot markers.
