Lined paper
Pens, pencils, and erasers
One two pocket folder for journal and homework
Grading policy: Homework/Classwork (dependent on assignment) 10 – 50 points
Essays, quizzes, projects and tests 100 – 200 points
Participation or completion grades 10 – 20 points
Homework assignments: Students will usually have one vocabulary homework assignment due every Wednesday and one writing journal entry due every Friday (2 assignments per week on average). Some weeks will differ due to scheduling or other activities. In addition, at times students may need to complete classwork assignments as homework. Projects will be assigned periodically to be completed at home in addition to weekly homework. All homework and projects will be copied into the student planner with due dates.
Homework policy: Homework is due on the due date. Homework will be copied into your child’s planner the first day of the week. It is your child’s responsibility to write down the homework, complete the homework, and turn it in when it is due. Late homework will be accepted one day late, but will only earn ½ credit. Late homework will not be accepted more than one day late.
Makeup work: If your child is absent, it will be your child’s responsibility to make up any missing work or homework. It will also be their job to find out what has been missed by asking the teacher, another student, or checking online or on the classroom chalkboard. Your child must turn in makeup work in a timely manner. They will have the number of days absent plus one to make up any missed assignments.
Course overview: This year we will be working on reading, writing, listening and speaking, and language skills. We will be covering the Florida Common Core Standards for Language Arts. These can be viewed online on the CPALMS website URL: www.floridastandards.org. The curriculum will focus on many different reading and writing skills and tasks including short and extended response questions, text-based essay writing (both expository/informational and persuasive/argumentative), research and technology skills, written language conventions, oral presentations, vocabulary development, and reading and responding to complex text with an emphasis on close reading. Some major projects will include a creative writing assignment in January and an independent reading book project in the second semester.
Textbooks: Each child will be using the Collections textbook published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and accompanying resources including their own close reader workbook and an assessment booklet. We will also be reading a class novel this year entitled The Giver. Additional resources will include TeenBiz 3000 online reading program and supplemental online resources. NO TEXTBOOKS WILL BE COMING HOME FOR LANGUAGE ARTS THIS SCHOOL YEAR. All materials will be used in class only.
