Step 1:  Pick a character that you are going to imagine to be while writing your journal.   Please circle one.

1. Farmer                 2.  Scribe               3. Merchant                       4. Tomb Robber

5. Pharaoh                          6. Servant                          7. Pyramid Builder

                        8. Undertaker (person who mummified the Pharaoh)

**If you want to pick a different character that isn’t listed ask Ms. Brown first!!!

Step 2: Create 3 journal entries from the viewpoint of your character.

  1. The journal must be historically accurate!!!   This means that the things you write about in your journal could have possibly taken place.  For example, if you choose to be a scribe, you could write about creating hieroglyphics on the walls of a pyramid.   You would NOT include in your journal that you went to the mall, drove in a car, etc.   These things would not be historically accurate.
  2. You will write in the first person.  For example you would say “Today I worked on an amazing tomb painting…”

4.   Each journal entry must contain at least 3 facts.   An example of a fact could be a specific step in the mummification process, a specific place that a battle took place, etc.  You may use your notes, your book, or the internet to find these facts.  These facts must be underlined!

Example

 Dear Journal,

Today I was asked to begin work on the Pharaoh’s tomb.  I am very excited to start working.  It is a great honor to be a scribe, because few Egyptians can write.  I am one of the lucky ones!  I am also very proud to be working for the pharaoh.  It is a great honor indeed.   The pyramid I will be working on is for King Khufe’s son.  It will be one of the largest pyramid ever built in my country!

I will be writing in hieroglyphics.  Hieroglyphics is the type of writing that we Egyptians use.  It is very detailed and beautiful.   We draw small pictures that stand for sounds or words.   We decorate the pyramids with hieroglyphics in order to provide the buried person with all of the objects and pleasures shown on the walls.
