Here are some ideas of ways to orally read with your child and some ways to practice fluency.  It’s important to keep in mind that enjoyment of the text is fundamental; take the time to have fun with the book and convey the wonder of words to your child.

Some ideas for reading with your child:

Try any of these ways….

1) Have your child silently read a paragraph, a line or page (whatever is most appropriate) to himself, marking areas or words that are difficult.  You may want to try a white coloring pencil which will not mark up the book and still allow underlining and tracking.  Using highlighter strips to notate difficult words is very valuable also.  The parent then responds to any area of difficulty and the child reads this part orally.

2) Parent and child read chorally.

3) Parent can read one paragraph, child can read one paragraph.

4) Parent can read paragraph/page and child repeats it after parent.

5) Parent begins the sentence and child finishes it, and/or child begins each sentence and parent completes it.

Some ideas for advancing fluency:

All the steps below should be followed so child has three or four rereads of same passage.

1) Silent reading: Child silently reads a passage (nor more than 100 words or so)

2) Choral reading: Parent and child reread passage together.

3) Echo reading: Parent reads passage with expression, stopping at punctuation marks and stressing his/her voice to reflect text. Child echo reads by imitating pace and stress heard by parent’s model.
